Fieldwork Diary Entry (January 18, 2013)

Having just attended the first lecture for the Ethnographic Fieldwork module with Ann, I realised how limited my fieldwork project will be.  There is so much more I would like to achieve for this project which will not be possible due to time and resources.   However I know that this module is for us to get a taste of fieldwork and to understand parameters are necessary within fieldwork. My parameters are tight for I have Fridays to dedicate to this work and some snatched time on the weekends and that is it.

At today's lecture the class shared with one another what our fieldwork projects will be.  I found out that Eulanda, a fellow student is teaching swing dance on Tuesday nights at Roehampton Uni and will be covering Charleston next Tuesday.  She said she will be covering more partner Charleston as well as some of the Shim Sham so I intend to go along to get another view of Charleston from another teacher.

Some key things I need to tick off quickly are:

1) Formulate a questionnaire for Charleston teachers and students. The purpose of this questionnaire is to find out how they view the Charleston, the reason they are involved with it, their backgrounds and how does it affect their lives in general.

2) Formulate a questionnaire for the general public as I would like to get a common denominator view of how the Charleston is perceived currently by the average person on the street.  I will send this out to my personal network and ask them to send it out to their networks  and so on.

3) I think I would like to present my fieldwork electronically in the form of a blog so need to set one up and start transcribing data into it.

4) Set up interviews with Rosaria, Glambop Fitness and any class participants that are willing.

The snow is getting heavier so I hope I can make it to tonight's class with Rosaria.  If I get there, I am intending to take half the class as a participant and the other half as an observer where I will take photos and film.
